Live playthrough of the fast action dice rolling Kickstarter game Star Fighters Rapid Fire by Alley Cat Games. Back Star Fighters on Kickstarter . About Star Fighters: Rapid Fire combines the excitement of real-time dice rolling with tactical starship combat. Each player hops into the cockpit of their own starfighter and duels it out in a dog fight to prove who is the superior pilot. {Guest Post} How to Reasonably Stick to a Holiday Budget!

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 03:40 PM PST

Spread Holiday Cheer without Spreading Your Money Too Thin {a guest post}

About the Author: Kiley Theiring is a film studentat Chapman University who also loves to write. She writes about saving money and living frugally for CouponMountain and also maintains her own personal blog.

During the holidays, it can be easy to get caught up in the holiday hype. With everyone rushing around manically trying to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones, you can be swept up in the excitement and end up spending way too much. Avoid post-holiday bills and take control of your finances by creating a holiday budget for this season.

  • Make a list of everything you will spend money on. During the holiday season, your big expenses will not only be gifts. Consider everything else that it takes to prepare for the holiday season. Food, decorations, seasonal outfits, and travel expenses all add up to your holiday total. When you make your gift-giving list, include every person you think that you will want to buy a gift for so that there are no last minute additions to your budget.
  • Be specific and decisive about what actually gets funded in your budget. While it would be great to have all the best decorations and the perfect gifts for everyone you know, most of us don't have the luxury to afford all of that. Make separate "need" and "want" lists. You may have to forego buying gifts for a few people. Put all of your immediate family on the need list, but maybe move that friend of yours you see once a year onto the want list. If you plan to not exchange gifts with someone, tell them in advance so they do not buy a gift for you, or else you will feel downright bad.
  • Shop early to get the best deals. While there may be tons of sales during Christmas time, they also lead to devastating overspending. If you start shopping early enough, there will be plenty of normal sales and deals that you can find before the holidays just by looking around early. October 1st – December 1st is a great time to get your holiday shopping done early. Plus, shopping early gives you more time to do holiday activities and you won't have to be stressed about running out to find last minute gifts.
  • Stick to your budget to the best of your abilities. Of course there will be emergencies or changes, but try your best to rearrange your budget rather than just add expenses to it. This will help you out because you will know months in advance exactly how much the holiday season will cost you.
  • Consider traditions over gifts. Expensive gifts aren't going to be the most memorable parts of the holidays. Many of the memories your family will treasure are ones that come from the family traditions they partake in every year. Planning ahead will help you leave time – and money if needed – in your schedule for traditional holiday activities.

Thanks, Kiley!
